Supplements for Gut Health

While food should always come first, supplements can provide additional support for gut healing. Here are some of my recommendations that I use daily and have helped me tremendously:

 1. Probiotic

  • Probiotics support the microbiome with live bacteria strains. They should be products with 50–200 billion bacteria with strains such as Lactobacillus acidophilusRhamnosusPlantarum, bifidobacteria, and Acidophilus reuteri.

 2. Prebiotics

  • Feed the good bacteria in your gut with supplements or foods like chicory root, dandelion greens, Jerusalem artichoke, onions and garlic.

 3. Digestive Enzymes

  • Helps to break down food and improve nutrient absorption.
  • You can take one before each meal to aid in better digestion.

I use and recommend the Zenwise Digestive Enzymes. I take one before each meal to help with the bloating and the breakdown of my food.

 4. L-Glutamine

  • L-Glutamine is an amino acid that supports gut health by repairing the intestinal lining, reducing inflammation, and improving digestion. A recommended dosage is up to 15 grams per day (5g per serving), equivalent to 5000mg in capsules or powder. This protocol, advised by my functional health doctor, played a key role in healing my leaky gut. However, always consult your healthcare provider before starting any supplement. Below are my top recommendations for both powder and capsule forms, depending on your preference for daily intake.
  • Designs 4 Health 3000mg Powder Form
  • BestVite 1000mg Capsules

5. Colostrum

  • Boosts Immunity: Colostrum is rich in antibodies and immune-boosting compounds, helping to strengthen your body’s defenses against infections and illnesses.
  • Supports Gut Health: Packed with probiotics and growth factors, colostrum promotes a healthy gut lining, reduces inflammation, and aids in digestion.

How to Use: mix one scoop into very small amount of water. Stir to mix and drink. You can also dry scoop some of these, but I was not a fan of doing it this way. It will turn to a gluelike substance in your mouth which is normal. (I was not a fan of it this way)

The product I highly recommend that has helped with not only my gut health, but also my hair and skin is Armra Colostrum in the Blood Orange flavor. It is amazing and reminds me of eating the push ups from the ice cream truck in the summertime as a kid.

6. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

  • Reduces inflammation and supports gut health.

7. Psyllium Husk

  • A fiber supplement that promotes regular bowel movements.

How to Use: Add 1-2 teaspoons of psyllium husk to a glass of water, juice, or plant-based milk. Stir well and drink immediately (it thickens quickly!). Follow with another glass of water to ensure proper digestion.

8. Black Seed, also known as Nigella sativa or black cumin.

  • This has been used for centuries in traditional medicine for its remarkable health benefits. This tiny, black seed packs a powerful punch, offering a wide range of benefits for your gut, immune system, skin, and more.
  • It is a natural remedy for digestive issues. I recently discovered this powerful “seed of blessing” and consume daily.

How to Use: Mix 1 teaspoon of black seeds with a good organic raw honey (or Manuka honey) grind it together with the spoon and consume before meals.

I recently discovered the incredible benefits of this powerful seed and incorporated it into my daily routine for gut health. Since then, it has significantly reduced bloating and discomfort, making a noticeable difference in how I feel. I recommend Organic Terrasoul Superfoods Black Seeds, which I mix with a teaspoon of honey. You can also get it as Black Seed Oil and Black Seed Capsules. The seeds are actually pretty tasty with the honey, so it’s easy for me to eat a teaspoon per day.

9. Zinc

  • Zinc plays a crucial role in gut health, supporting digestion, immune function, and gut lining repair. Some benefits include: Repairing and maintaining the intestinal barrier, preventing leaky gut, lowers gut-related inflammation, easing conditions like IBS, and supports the growth of beneficial bacteria for a healthier digestive system.

10. Vitamin D

  • Vitamin D helps to support the gut lining, lowers gut related inflammation, and encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria for better digestion.
